Drill Overview: One-Timer & One-Touch Shooting

This drill teaches proper mechanics for quick-release shots and helps players adjust their technique based on the direction of the pass. It focuses on:

Speed & accuracy – reducing shot hesitation for faster scoring chances
Proper body positioning – adjusting for forehand and backhand reception
Quick weight transfer – generating power efficiently

Drill Setup

  • Two passers are positioned on either side of the net in the same end.
  • The shooter stands in the high slot, between the tops of the two faceoff circles.

Shooting Techniques

1️⃣ Snapshot Technique (Forehand) – Pass from the Left Side

  • The shooter receives the ball on the forehand.
  • They quickly cradle the ball on their front foot, applying pressure to the ground.
  • The ball explodes off the stick almost immediately, resulting in a fast and deceptive shot.

2️⃣ Wrist Shot (Backhand) – Pass from the Right Side

  • The shooter cradles the ball more fully, pivots their feet, and executes a wrist shot.
  • Unlike the snapshot, the wrist shot requires the shooter to:
    • Pull the ball to their back foot.
    • Transfer their weight forward.
    • Follow through with the shot for accuracy and power.

Coaching Tip: Speed is Key!

Encourage players to release the ball as quickly as possible. A fast shot reduces the time defenders and goaltenders have to react, increasing the likelihood of scoring opportunities.
