Mastering Goalie Movement: A Training Drill for Ball Hockey

Proper movement and positioning are essential for any goaltender looking to control angles and make key saves. We’ll break down a goalie movement and angle progression drill that helps players refine their footwork, positioning, and ability to track shots effectively. Be sure to check out the embedded tutorial video for a full demonstration!

Drill Overview

This drill provides both verbal and visual coaching cues to help goaltenders develop strong fundamentals. It focuses on:
✅ Staying square to the shooter
✅ Mastering crease positioning
✅ Controlling movement without overextending

This drill is performed with one goaltender at a time and is designed to reinforce precise movement while tracking shots from different areas of the floor.

Step-by-Step Breakdown

1. Setting Up the Drill

  • The goaltender starts in the net.
  • The coach attaches ropes or a band from each top corner of the net (where the post meets the crossbar) and connects them back to the goaltender.
  • The ropes should be adjusted to allow movement just beyond the crease, keeping the goalie square to the shooter but preventing overextension.
  • The coach should test the setup on both sides of the rink before starting.

2. Establishing Shot Locations

The coach sets up three primary shooting positions:
1️⃣ One at each blue line point along the boards
2️⃣ One at the center of the blue line

The goaltender starts in position, either hugging a post or centered in the net, depending on where the shot will come from.

3. Teaching Proper Movement

  • The goalie steps toward the shooter until the rope stops their movement, providing a physical cue of where to position themselves.
  • Once set, they should crouch and square up before shuffling to the next location.
  • The goaltender moves through all three shot locations, returning to their starting position after each sequence.

4. Progression: Adding Shots & Butterfly Saves

  • Once comfortable with the movement pattern, the coach introduces shots from different locations.
  • The goaltender performs a butterfly save, then quickly resets and continues shuffling through the sequence.
  • The coach can mix up shot placement to challenge the goalie’s reaction time and positioning.

Key Takeaways for Goalie Movement

✔️ Stay in the crease – don’t drift too far out of position.
✔️ Always remain square to the shooter – proper angles are critical.
✔️ Avoid crossing your feet – instead, use controlled shuffles.
✔️ Maintain a low, balanced stance – don’t overextend or lose your crouch.
✔️ One foot should always be planted while shuffling for stability.
