Throughout the month of December, we gave you the power to vote for who you thought were the best Forwards, Defensemen and Goalies playing ball hockey right now. Well you voted, and the results are in. These are the current player rankings, as decided by you, the ball hockey enthusiast!

Top Forward: Iain Downes – Niagara War Pigs – 25.6%

Iain Downes, the two-way centre from Thorold, Ontario has earned a reputation for coming up clutch in the big moments with a goal, assist, key faceoff win, or a big defensive play.  Downes has been honing his game over the past 10 years, and has found success on multiple levels.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Gold Medal with the Edmonton Savages.
    • Named Top Offensive Player of the Tournament
  • 2017 World Ball Hockey Federation Championships – Fourth Place with Team Great Britain Heritage.
    • Team Captain
  • 2017 World Outdoor Championships – B Champs with London Reapers.
  • 2016 North American Ball Hockey Championships – Gold Medal with Niagara War Pigs.
  • 2016 World Outdoor Championships – “A” Champs with Niagara War Pigs.

Honourable Mention

Shawn Hannon – Brampton Express – 19.5%

Shawn Hannon is a gifted offensive player, generating 302 points (100G 202A) in 165 career games between Premier and Tier 2 teams.  From Oshawa, Ontario, Hannon is a relentless forechecker, which when combined with a huge reach, lethal shot, and an uncanny vision on the floor, makes him a force to be reckoned with for any team.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 World Outdoor Ball Hockey Championships – “B” Champs with London Reapers.
  • Back to Back Clash of the Titans Champs with Brampton Express (2017 & 2016)
  • 2016 Summer Premier Championship with Brampton Express
  • 2015 Team Canada member at World Cup of Ball Hockey

Danick Martel – Montreal Red Lite – 17.1%

Danick Martel is often referred to as the most offensively gifted player in the sport of ball hockey.  The 23-year-old from Drummondville, Quebec not only excels on the floor but on the ice as well.  A current member of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers), Martel is tied for the team lead in goals scored, and recently made his Philadelphia Flyers debut in November of 2017.

  • 2017 International Street & Ball Hockey Federation Championship – Silver Medal with Team Canada.
  • 2016 Canadian Ball Hockey Association Championship – Gold Medal with Montreal Red Lite.
    • Named Tournament MVP

Top Defencemen: Brian Szolga – Niagara War Pigs – 23.8%

Niagara Falls native, Brian Szolga is a massive presence on the defensive end, and isn’t shy about pulling the trigger on his bomb of a shot.  Szolga is versatile, displaying the ability to run and gun, or play a lock down game.

  • 2017 International Street & Ball Hockey Federation Championships – Silver Medal with Team Canada.
  • 2016 World Outdoor Championships – “A” Champs with Niagara War Pigs.

Honourable Mention:

Joel Andresen – Edmonton Savages – 22.2%

A physically intimidating force on the floor, the 6’3” 210 lbs defencemen from St. Albert, Alberta has been making a name for himself provincially and nationally over the past few years.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Gold Medal with Edmonton Savages.
    • Named Tournament All-Star.
  • 2016 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Bronze Medal with Edmonton Savages
    • Named Tournament All-Star.
  • Tier 1 Alberta Provincial Championship.

Dylan Churchwell – Vancouver Falcons – 20.6%

An Assistant Captain with the Vancouver Falcons, Dylan Churchwell has been a key part of this program and its growth into one of the top teams in Canada.  Churchwell was a huge reason why the Falcons performed so well at the 2017 CBHA Championships.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 World Ball Hockey Federation Championship – Gold Medal with Team Canada.
    • Named Tournament MVP and Defensive All-Star.
  • 2017 Canadian Ball Hockey Association Championship – Silver Medal with Vancouver Falcons.
    • Named Top Defensemen and Defensive All-Star.
  • British Columbia Provincial “A” Championship.

Top Goaltender: Paul Zarnett – Metro Orangemen – 37.3%

Paul Zarnett is known to be one of the steadiest netminders in the game.  When polled by Stick Skillz, a majority of ball hockey players said that in a do-or-die game that Zarnett is the goalie they want in net.  The Toronto, Ontario native’s clutch performance was on display recently when he helped the Metro Orangmen qualify for the upcoming Nationals.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 World Ball Hockey Federation Championship – Gold Medal with Team Canada
  • 2016 Clash of the Titans – Silver Medal with Metro Orangemen.

Honourable Mention

Dave Yarham – Edmonton Savages – 26.9%

From Edmonton, Alberta, Dave Yarham has been a key component of the Edmonton Savages’ success.  A consistently steady performer, he receives perhaps the greatest compliment a goalie can get – he makes all the stops he is supposed to make, and often the ones we never expect him to make.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Gold Medal with the Edmonton Savages.
    • Named tournament MVP, and Top Goaltender.
  • 2016 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Bronze Medal with the Edmonton Savages.
  • Tier 1 Alberta Provincial Championship.

Adam Butler – Vancouver Falcons – 17.9%

A Vancouver Premier Ball Hockey League veteran, many credit Adam Butler as one of the key reasons the Falcons not only made the 2017 CBHA National Championship final, but nearly pulled off the win.

Recent Accomplishments:

  • 2017 Canadian Ball Hockey Association National Championship – Silver Medal with the Vancouver Falcons.
  • British Columbia Provincial “A” Championship.
