The Ontario Ball Hockey Association (OBHA) Women’s Pre-Season Showcase took place April 26-28 in Mississauga, Ontario. Showcase is the perfect term for this event as there was incredible talent on display the entire weekend. Twelve teams competed in A, B, and C Divisions.
The A Division featured three returning teams including both the 2018 champs, London Redliners and finalist, the Midland Battalion. 2019 also saw the return of the Durham Stars, who had revenge on their mind after a semi-final loss in 2018.
After the round robin, it appeared that the Redliners were in full control of this division heading into the playoff rounds.
They say that anything can happen in the playoffs and that is exactly what occurred in the semi-finals as the 3 and 4 seeded teams coming in knocked off the 1 and 2 seed in two hotly contested games.
- (4) Midland Battalion 2 – (1) London Redliners 1
- (3) Durham Selects 2 – Simcoe Storm 0
The final was a defensive battle that saw the Selects carrying a 2-1 lead into the second period. However, the Battalion would tie it up late in the second frame and send the game to overtime. Nothing was settled after the first OT, pushing the game into another sudden death OT frame, and finally, the Battalion would score to capture a 3-2 victory.
B & C Divisions
The story in the B and C divisions were new faces as five of this year’s teams did not compete in the tournament in 2018. After the round robin portion of the tournament, the standings looked like this:
B Division Standings
|Steel City Bombers||3||0||0||6||9||0|
|London Ball Hoggz||2||1||0||4||6||1|
|North York Hurricanes||1||2||0||2||1||4|
|Barrie Better Halves||0||3||0||0||0||8|
C Division Standings
In the playoff rounds, the divisions cross over to compete against each other.
- (B1) Pittsburgh Steel City Bombers 3 – (C2) WTC Masters 1
- (C1) Toronto Stars 1 – (B2) London Ball Hoggz 0
In the B Final, the Steel City Bombers would be the first on the board in the opening frame, and hold that lead throughout the entire game. The Bombers would add an empty-netter late in the game to secure a 2-0 victory.
- (C4) Simcoe 136 1 – (B3) North York Hurricanes 0
- (C3) Scarborough Penguins 8 – (B4) Barrie Better Halves 2
The C Final was all Penguins as they would jump out to an early 4-0 lead in the first period and coast to a 5-1 victory over Simcoe 136.
