Canada Dominates World Junior Ball Hockey Championships

Prague, Czech Republic –Three teams (U16, U18, U20) representing Canada participated in the World Junior Ball Hockey Championships from June 28 to July 3 in Prague, Czech Republic.   As a whole, Canada dominated throughout the tournament, not losing a single game or squandering a single point to their competition going undefeated at every level with an impressive 11-0 round robin record.

U-20 Summary – Canada finished atop the round robin standings winning all four of their games in convincing fashion.  Easily the most dominant of the three Canadian teams, the U20 team scored an impressive 28 goals in four games while only allowing 4 goals against.  Benoit Chin led team Canada and was the tournament scoring leader with 15 points in 4 games followed by teammates Quinn Syrydiuk with 13 points, and Jack Scanlan with 12 points.  Team USA finished second in the division, followed up Slovakia, and Hungary. Host nation, Czech Republic failed to qualify for the elimination round after going pointless in the round robin.

In the semi-finals Canada beat Hungary 11-0, and USA beat Slovakia 3-2 setting up a classic Canada vs. USA Gold Medal game. After beating USA two days earlier by a score of 6-1 in the final round robin game, Canada was challenged early by a determined USA team.  After a scoreless first period, tournament scoring leader Beniot Chin scored 2 in the second period ultimately leading to a 5-0 Canadian win. Beniot Chin followed up his strong round robin play with another 6 points in the two elimination games. In the Bronze Medal game, Slovakia beat Hungary by a score of 5-1.

U-18 Summary–Canada finished atop the round robin standings winning all four of their preliminary games.  Unlike the U20 team, this Canadian team was challenged by their competition right from the start.  Canada opened against the Czech Republic, winning by a score of 4-3 followed by a 5-4 win against team Euro. In their final two games, Canada dominated Hungary and Slovakia. Tyson Gilmour led team Canada in points and was tied with three team Euro players for the tournament lead in points.  Team Euro finished second in the division followed up Slovakia and Czech Republic.  Hungary failed to qualify for the elimination round after going pointless in the round robin.

In the semi-finals Canada overcame an early 3-1 deficit to beat the Czech Republic 6-4, and Slovakia upset team Euro 5-4 in the other semi-final. Much like their round robin matchup, Canada dominated Slovakia, capturing the Gold Medal winning by a score of 7-2. In the Bronze Medal game, after being down 4-0, team Euro forced overtime and with momentum clearly now in their hands, scored roughly five minutes into overtime winning the Bronze medal.

U-16 Summary – Canada finished atop the round robin standings winning all three of their preliminary games.  Eric Maltby led team Canada in points and finished tied for the tournament lead in points. The Czech Republic finished second in the division and Team USA finished third. Despite going winless in the round robin, with only four teams in the division, Slovakia qualified for the elimination round.

In the semi-finals, Canada easily beat Slovakia winning by a score of 9-1, and although they lost to the Czech Republic in the round robin, team USA pulled off the upset winning 4-2.  In the Gold Medal game, Canada beat USA 3-1; wrapping up what was impressive display of defense and goaltending by surrendering only 5 tournament goals. In the Bronze medal game, the Czech Republic beat Slovakia 6-2 to capture the Bronze medal.
