Toronto, ON–Fri, September 9, 2016–The 2016-2017 NHL season is still a few weeks away but there are plenty of NHL stars currently in game mode, lacing ‘em up for their respective nations in the World Cup of Hockey. Tonight, Canada will open up its pre-tournament schedule against the US in a game that will no doubt be just as intense as the last meeting between these two squads at the 2014 Winter Olympics (just in case you forgot, Canada won gold and the US lost to Finland in the Bronze Medal Game). Not only are these players representing their respective countries, they’re also representing the the ball hockey community.
Canada has 4 players with strong ties to ball hockey with Tyler Seguin (North York Minor), Joe “The Beard” Thornton (London Men’s), Corey Perry (London Men’s) and Braden Holtby (SBHL). Those are some pretty heavy hitters who have cut their teeth on the ball hockey rink. Canada isn’t the only country with players who’ve ditched the skates for sneakers; Team North America boasts Connor McDavid (Newmarket Minor), Mark Scheifele (Kitchener-Waterloo Minor) and Jack Eichel (USDHF). All that ball hockey must have helped those guys as Team North America dominated Team Europe in their first pre-tournament game, beating Europe 4-0. Stick Skillz will be following the tournament closely, so be sure to check out our Twitter and Facebook pages for updates.
